The answer to this and many, many other questions concerning gardening in 
the Inland Northwest can be found on the WSU Cooperative Extension Web site 
at http://pubs.wsu.edu/.  A lot of the information can be downloaded for 
free, although many publications must be purchased (also possible 
online).  Specifically relevant books concerning gardening in the Palouse 
are at http://pubs.wsu.edu/sample/INW.html.
