YOUR Chance to Support Equal Rights in Moscow

Dear Friends of Muscovites for Equal Rights,

As you may know, we are coming down to the wire to get the 2300
signatures required to put Moscow Ordinance 2002-13 before the voters of
our community. We've made a lot of progress and the goal IS within our
reach. But, the last day (9/24) to VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME is quickly
approaching! And, WE NEED YOUR HELP.

What you may not be aware of is that Moscow Police Department (MPD) is
gearing up to enforce the ordinance. Not surprisingly, MPD doesn't seem
to understand the law as we've had many reports of women being warned
for showing center cleavage, something that's still ***legal*** under
the new law. We've had a first-hand account from a woman who was
actually warned by MPD, and her account is enough to make anyone's blood
run cold.

Also not surprisingly, *women* are the target of this enforcement as
we've not had a *single* report of a male being warned about showing the
cleft of the buttocks (aka "plumber's butt).

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

While getting this ordinance put before the voters IS WITHIN REACH, we
can really use some help from our supporters.

We've come up with a list of things YOU can do to help accomplish the
goal of putting Moscow Ordinance No. 2002-13 to a referendum vote. If
each person who reads this can find the time to help with even just one
or two of items below, WE WILL BE SUCCESSFUL!

1- Join us at the Latah County Fair this evening at 8 PM to help gather
signatures. We'll be meeting at the gazebo (across from the Exhibits
building) to get started.

2- Join us this evening in Friendship Square at 10 PM to help gather
signatures. Talented musician Mark Rounds will be playing his guitar
and this should be a FUN event.

3- Visit the Latah County Fair today through Sunday morning to collect
signatures on your own time schedule. You can call Garrett Clevenger
(883-7065) or Saundra Lund (882-2150) if you want tips on how to
approach people or need supplies. We have people scheduled to work the
fair Saturday afternoon and you're welcome to join us! Call Saundra
(882-2150) for more information.

4- Farmer's Market: we can always use volunteers to staff our table
Saturday mornings from 9 AM to noon (even just an hour or so of that
time will be appreciated) for the next two Saturdays (9/14 & 9/21).
Contact Garrett (883-7065) for more information or to volunteer.

5- Donate part/all of your lunch hour to collecting signatures at the
University of Idaho's Commons. We're committed to maintaining a
presence on campus Monday - Friday from 11 AM until 1 PM through 9/24.
Call Garrett or Saundra for more information or to volunteer.

6- Moscow Food Co-Op: they've generously allowed us to collect
signatures there as often as we can have someone there. We need
volunteers to commit to spending more time there. THIS IS FLEXIBLE --
we can use you whenever you've got the time! Please call Mark Rounds
(882-0614) or Saundra (882-2150) for more information or to volunteer
your time. We're happy to help you get set up and feeling comfortable.

7- Team up with Eirie: Eirie is a volunteer who is interested in
canvassing neighborhoods, but she needs a partner. If this is something
that interests you, please call Eirie at 882-8288 to coordinate. This
really is a GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY to reach people we've not found out &
about in the community.

8- Circulate a petition among your friends & neighbors: we need MORE
PEOPLE willing to help out in this way. Believe us, every signature is
IMPORTANT, so if you can get even three new signatures, this will be
greatly appreciated. DON'T HOLD BACK because you don't think you can
fill a whole petition -- we need as many signatures as possible, and the
more people we have helping with this activity, the better!

9- Write letters to the editors of local newspapers: this is VERY
IMPORTANT! Since the new ordinance has been on the books for about two
months, this issue may have slipped from the forefronts of peoples'
minds. Writing letters to the editors is a GREAT WAY to remind the
community, and our leaders, that Moscow Ordinance No. 2002-13 has GOT TO
GO! Contact Garrett or Saundra for a list of places to send your
letters, and please send a copy to us at: idahomer@hotmail.com.

10- Write letters to our mayor and city council members: they need to
know that our community is NOT forgetting about this issue. Even if
you've written before, WRITE AGAIN. Please, send a copy to us at:
idahomer@hotmail.com.

City Council:

jmack@turbonet.com
steveb@moscow.com
jmhill@moscow.com
mtethoma@moscow.com

Our mayor, Marshall Comstock, is at
comstock@moscow.com

11- If you've not yet signed the petition or a postcard, LET US KNOW!
We're glad to get a petition and/or postcard to you at your convenience,
and if you've got friends who still haven't signed, have them contact
Garrett (883-7065) or Saundra (882-2150).

As you can see, the list of ways YOU can help is varied. We're hoping
everyone can find at least two things from the above list to help with.
DON'T BE SHY -- WE NEED YOU!! This is your chance to become an active
participant in democracy and help make Moscow an EQUAL RIGHTS community
-- don't miss the chance to do something you can feel really good about.

We look forward to hearing back from you.

For more information, please contact Garrett at 883-7065 or Saundra at
882-2150. Or, you can drop an email message to idahomer@hotmail.com or
to sslund@moscow.com.
