Grandparents as Parents
September 8th was National Grandparents Day. Grandparents parenting
grandchildren have vital care-taking roles and need special kinds of
support. Currently, 4.5 million children under 18 are growing up in
grandparent-headed households, an increase of 30% since 1990. Idaho ranks
5th in the nation for grandparents raising grandchildren. Approximately
one-third of these children have no parent present in the home.
Grandparents (and other relatives) who act as parents face unique issues.
If you find yourself a grandparent or a relative raising children and you
have questions about financial or legal issues, health insurance, school
enrollment and education, child behavior, emotional or other issues, we
want to hear from you! We are planning to start a support group to
address these issues and want your input. Please contact Sarah Rial at
Adult Day Health 883-6483.
Sponsored by Gritman Young Children and Family Programs, Adult Day Health,
and the Department of Health and Welfare Children and Family Services.
