This discussion started with a concern regarding a quote that was
attributed to Representative Gary Young in the local paper. Last week I
heard that Shirley Ringo said in one forum that she had been stalking Gary
Young for two years. Assuming this is an accurate quote than it becomes
very clear that both sides have made statments in the heat of a
campaign.
It is much too simplistic to suggest that the prospects for peace,
justice and happiness rest with the power struggle for partisan control of
any branch of the government. In another life, far, far from
here, I served as an officer in Democratic party. During those
years I beleived with all my heart and sole that the Democratic Party
could save the world. I felt tremendous pain as steady string of leaders
crashed and faded before our eyes: Gary Hart, Jesse Jackson, Joe Biden,
Bill Cinton etc....
There was a time in my life when I regarded the Republican party as
the evil empire (excuse the outdated term, but I grew up in the Reagan
administration. Today the proper word might be axis of evil). In 1992 I
worked with two very prominent local Republicans on a Democratic campaign.
They risked serious political and business consequennces for being
outspoken of their party. During this time I learned that Republicans are
humans, who have families, hopes, fears and dreams of peace. The
statewide issue around the lack of balance in the state legislature is not
new. I lived through it in Colorado and it has played itself out in many
other states as well. Through the years I have not voted for a lot of
republicans but I have paid less and less attention to which party has
control over the various branches of government.
Gary Hart made a comment near the end of his farewell speach in May
of 1988 in which he said, "I tremble for my country when I think we may in
fact get the kind of leaders we deserve." I have always taken that
statment to reflect more on the citizens than it has the leaders of this
country. It is the average person on the street who does not seem to
recognize the power he has to influcence leaders and legislation through a
process of love and compassion. It is not enough to send out emails,
circulate petitions, lobby elected officials and get depressed over
various issues that we care deeply about.
Peace and justice must be deeply rooted in a grassroots movment.
There is little incentive for leaders to change their tactics if people
are screaming for change but are engaged in the same old paradigm of
looking at a number of issues. It has been said many times that there is
little difference between the two major parties. History shows us that a
Democratic administration is no more apt to bring about peace than a
Republican. For instance I attended peace vigils associated with the
various acts of war during the Clinton administration. How many people in
this community seriously believe that Al Gore would not have had a
warmongering initial reaction to the events of September 11? To heal from
September 11 will require an ability to look much deeper than the video of
the planes crashing into the buildings. It ill require a willingess to
discover peace and love within ourselves.
This afternoon I will attend the peace vigil. For me this will be a
time to celebrate peace and love. We now know who we must work with to
effect change at a legislative level and that is a relief. We must set
aside anger and bitterness and become willing to work for dare I say it,
the common good of all mankind.
