Note to Vision2020 list: I originally wrote this for my dad, who lives in
Boise; hence several explanatory notes. Did everyone see this story?

=========================================================================

Cover story in the Lewiston Tribune today: the top 10 employers in N.
Central ID and SE WA:

1. WSU
2. UI
3. Potlatch
4. St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center (LWS)
5. Blount, Inc. (ammunition manufacturer. Don't know where they're
located.)
6. Nez Perce Tribe
7. Lewis-Clark State College
8. Lewiston School District
9. U.S. Forest Service
10. Regence/Blue Shield of Idaho

WSU is far and away the 800-lb. gorilla, employing 9,347 people in Whitman
County (that's the county Pullman is in.) Average management salary:
$66,548/annually. Average faculty: $49,634. Average clerical/technical
staff: $29,473.

UI is a distant second with 2,503 employed. Average management: $43,151.
Average faculty: $48,237 (maybe Liz Zinser's emphasis on teaching is
working.) Average staff: $11.98/hr. That's $24,918/yr. assuming a 40-hr.
workweek and getting paid 52 wks/yr. (I had to extrapolate that myself --
the NEWSPAPER couldn't write all their statistics the same way, heaven
forbid!)

Potlatch employs 2,300 people and in 1997 had a $29 million payroll. They
don't disclose salaries -- don't blame 'em. (According to the story, UI
and WSU had huge (over $100 million) payrolls, but those are statewide.
Don't know what they are in Latah and Whitman counties.)

The rest of the employers employ from 798 people (St. Joseph's) down to 432
(Blue Cross.)

Interesting, eh? Whaddaya think?
