Re: Proposal for a new list

Everyone:

I think it a grand idea to have two lists, one for discussion and another
for a community bulletin board. A reading of the vision2020 web site
reveals that restricting vision2020 to a community bulletin board was never
the intention for this list.

Public discussion of issues in a democracy is not going to be the totally
logical, civil and reasonable enterprise that some participants in vision
2020 wish it was, myself included. But I think that if we are to stand by
the values of allowing all voices to speak, we must accept what happens,
even if it seems distasteful or futile. Democracy is an experiment. I
think the jury is still out on whether it will last as a viable form of
government. Certainly here in the USA we are dangerously close to losing
what semblance of democracy we have.

Perhaps some of the more egregious posts on vision2020 deserve to just be
ignored. Not with a shrug, but with intentions of fighting against these
points of view through other more effective means than arguing over and over
with certain people who post often to vision2020 that are as receptive to
fact and logic as a toad. We need some serious organized public protests,
and public ideological campaigns, to put certain groups on notice that they
can play their games only so far!

Who has the gumption for this? I hesitate, as many do, to commit themselves
to action when we have our comfortable lives to protect. Now this is where
the rubber meets the road. Who was it on vision2020 that made disparaging
comments about progressives in Moscow compared to Santa Cruz? He was flat
out right!

Vote on November 5.
