David Douglas asks for a working definition of homophobia, and I'm pleased to recommend Gregory Herek's website:

which includes some historical and evaluative context on several key terms, including homophobia, heterosexism, and sexual prejudice. Herek is a psychology professor at the University of California, Davis.
