Sure Tex - while I was on the Mardi Gras committee, this is what I assumed to
take place.
The committee charges each participating Venue or bar a fee. In turn that
puts the Venue's name on the poster. By the way - the names of all of my
businesses have NEVER been correctly spelled on the poster - and sometimes
even omitted. Everybody else's were correct ???????
The committee arranges for and pays for the entertainment in each Venue and
in turn they collect ALL the door and ticket proceeds. On that night there is
approximately 4-6,000 people participating in the evening events. You do the
math. One ticket purchased gets you into ALL the participating bars.
Yes, - it is an adult evening. Always has been. Mr. Tassler is correct in
every sense. The money that comes from ticket sales is the majority of the
funds donated. I have expressed my view several times to the committee in
regard to expanding the one night event into a weekend event with ALL
downtown merchants participating. That is what I view Mardi Gras to be.
Wouldn't it be fun to go into a restaurant and have gumbo and blackened
catfish? Think of the donations coming in from ALL downtown merchants. People
come to Mardi Gras from surrounding communities. Think if it was a
"community" event all the hotels would be full and downtown would be full of
people all day long. That is truly Mardi Gras and good for EVERY business.
If any downtown businesses are reading this and think it would be a good idea
for "future" Mardi Gras' please contact me. 883-3147 or CADJACKS@aol.com.
