The Community is invited to "Geography Matters!" - If you want to find out
how geography and GIS (geographic information system) technology make a
difference in your lives, please join us at the UI Commons Wednesday,
November 14, 2001.
The activities for GIS Day are listed below:
The talks will be at Whitewater Room, UI Commons, First Floor:
Date: Wed., Nov. 14, 2001
12:30 to 1:20pm:
"Names-Places: Preserving Tribal Culture and Language Using GIS",
by John Hartman, Coeur d'Alene Indian Tribe
This project preserves tribal culture by visiting geographic sites
and recording video, audio, and still photos of Elers describing the site in
both English and Coeur d'Alene languages.
1:30 to 2:00pm:
"INSIDE Idaho; a digital geospatial and statistical data clearinghouse" by
Lily Wai and Bruce Godfrey, UI Library.
If you need Idaho geospatial and attribute data for your research
or class projects, this website presentation is for you.
7:00 to 9:00pm:
"Climate change" by Drs. Von Walden and Vladimir Aizen
"Natural Resource GIS - What, How and Why?" by Eva Strand
"GAP Analysis Data" by Leona Svancara
The GIS demonstration booths will be located at the UI Commons, First
Floor, near the Whitewater Room from 9:00am to 4:00pm. The groups
representated are:
1. UI Geography Club (Andrew Clark and others, Geography Dept.)
2. INSIDE Idaho (Lily Wai and Bruce Godfrey, UI Library)
3. GIS Projects at the College of Natural Resources (Eva Strand, RS/GIS
Lab Coordinator)
4. UI GIS Certificate Program (Karl Chang, Geography Dept.)
5. Digital Maps published by Idaho Geological Survey (Loudon Stanford)
6. Remote Sensing projects in Weed science (Larry Lass, UI Weed Scientist)
7. Lewis and Clark Rediscovery (Bob Kearney, NASA project manager, retired
Physics Professor)
8. Landscape Architecture GIS projects (Toru Otawa, Landscape
Architecture Dept.)
9. GAP Analysis Data (Leona Svancara, Landscape Dynamics Lab)
To celebrate the nationwide GIS Day, UI GIS Users Group and the Geography
Club have arranged to have demonstration booths, and a series of talks at
