RE: Soccer Fans Attempt to Burn American Flag

I agree that many will stay in the beginning and many of the NATO countries
will keep up appearances but the majority of countries in the world will
not. I am not sure what you mean by those that count but I would assert that
all of them count in a democratic world. If we are not willing to accept
that then we are indeed hypocrites! I for one consider the opinion of all
people as valid. If you mean that they are important militarily then that is
a different matter. By the way most of the members of NATO are not going to
hang in there if we do not conduct ourselves justly. In fact we in this
country will not back the war if it is not conducted appropriately. I have
heard more Americans say that the ones who did this must be punished and
that the innocent people must be protected. It is more difficult... but as I
have said so many times... democracy is not easy!

Greetings -

I tend to disagree, Shahab. Sure. In the long run, when the going gets
tought and bloody, some allies may drop to the wayside. But, I strongly
believe that most of them (those that truly count the US as a friend and
ally) will understand the meaning of Article 5 of the NATO Pact, fearing
that they, too, may experience a World Trade Center type of terrorist action
in their own back yard.
