RE: The City this week, July 9-16, 2001 An Occasional View from a Council Member

Actually, the citizens of Idaho own the campus - not just the people here
in Moscow. Remember taxes levied and collected in Boise also support this
fine institution and Moscow and Latah County residents reap the benefit of
the students dollars and payroll from the regions largest employer.

I am at a loss for why this is such a big issue. I am grateful that I don't
have to pay $45 dollars to park downtown like I did in Chicago. Why can't
the City charge for parking on those streets and allow the University to
"buy" parking passes? Or better still, why can't the City transfer the
streets to the University with the caveat that they will remain open to the
public or will revert back to public ownership?

Not a bad point but off the mark. It's the University of "Idaho", not
"Moscow".  Base on your logic all parking, even off-street should be free;
however, to do that, someone, students or taxpayers, would have to build
parking lots, etc., with other funds. Nope, still don't have a problem with
University parkers paying to do so and those funds being used to create
places to put their vehicles.

While on the subject of OUR, Eighth Street does belong to the citizens of
Moscow. When the City agrees to Gritman's request to abandon it so they can
expand, I believe we should at least be paid for our property, i.e., pay the
City the downtown Moscow market price per square foot of ground obtained for
OUR street.
