These are both excellent questions/problems that invite a little serious
research. The ecological relationships between ungulates, whether wild or
domesticated, and the land, water, etc. are crucial to the health of
grasslands: manure, trampling seeds into soil, killing rodents, cyclical
grazing, etc. are all fundamental to all biotic systems there. I would
strongly suggest that
Andrew Grant and colleagues seek some appropriate counsel from U of I and
WSU (at the latter, I'd suggest both C. Jeff Goebel and Don Nelson as
knowledgeable, at least for locating the right sources of info.). When
cattle come into a grazing area, it's crucial that the right uses of
pasture, over a time period, be worked out; otherwise you'll have
depleted resources very early and problems with recovery. Allow me to
suggest an excellent book on this: Allan Savory, Holistic Management.
Wash. DC: Island Press, l998. Further info =

useful. Ken M.
