I agree that demonstrating respect to all members is critically important,
however I am uncomfortable with a parental approach like time out or
censoring the content of the posts. I enjoy the emotional responses to
this list but as Bill London has pointed out, we are all responsible to
avoid being petty and mean-spirited. Those members who repeatedly
violate the shared values of Vision 2020 do so at the risk of losing the
respect of this virtual community. As a natural consequence, they will
be ignored. What could be a better way than that to encourage civility?
Mr. Cooper's apology seems genuine to me but everyone needs to decide that
for themselves. Let's try to avoid sanctions or vision 2020 police.
Thanks.
John

The recent exchange between PC and Shahab caused me to recall just a few
months ago when someone was emailing trash to other members on this list.
While I am not accusing anyone of anything, I do think that we do need to
show everyone respect. We may have different opinions, but we all have a
right to them. Someone once said you can only begin to understand others
when you walk in their shoes. For Shahab, his complaint is legitimate.
Others may not see it that way, but we do have to respect him.
If anyone finds anyone else crossing the line, that person should be called
on it, and I think the person crossing the line should cool it for a given
amount of time, like a month. He or she can still read what comes accross
the list, but should not be welcomed to respond to anything. If such
behavior continues he or she should be removed from this list.
