Re: Treaty Grounds; wages in Moscow
Peggy, there are many organizations and institutions which have
outstanding and dedicated volunteers in our community, and I share your
praise and admiration of them. Volunteers come with integrity and
motivation, committment. Typically they are wanting to learn, share
their skills and truely give of themselves. They provide vital energy!!!
The dialogue on this listserve hasn't been adressing volunteers, rather
minimum wage workers. And there is a big difference!! Minimum wage
workers need to work, and for whatever reason (and consider that there
are many situations that place a person in the position to accept a
minimum wage job...folks working these jobs have very interesting
stories to tell, I'll bet!). And would make for a very insightful human
interest story for our community paper, rather than the muckraking and
inaccurate reporting that the newspaper staff spends time on.
It seems to me the discussion has been adressing the percieved lack of
quality service by certain workers, and that no matter what the wage the
individuals "ought" to put forth their best. Well, thats the moral I've
heard from these postings. Which brings me to several points: why is
integrity and quality so tied to a price tag in our culture/community?
And how can each of us instill pride and dignity in each and every role
and job within our community?
Again, I agree with Peggy, but we must keep the two issues of volunteers
and the minimum wagers separate.

As gas prices remain high in Moscow ($1.38.9 at the two low stations in town)
thought it time for another road report. Bought regular unleaded at Flying J
in Lewiston this afternoon at $124.9 (a penny less if belonged to Flying J
Rewards club). Since I really doubt Flying J is in business to lose money,
then they must be making money at a price 11% below Moscow's; that is unless
the deli and candy bar rack are really doing well.
Since I see Flying J tankers on the highway, is it possible their pump prices
are not controlled by other distributors?

Personally I liked the cookies offered through PCEI, but the cookies only
last a few minutes. Respect and other intrinsic rewards go a long way too,
but unfortunately they won't go far to get me a new roof this summer.
Visionaries?

Hmmm...large business mentors for small businesses...modeling the assertive
behaviors and ways of locating resources for the newly 'asking' small
business owner or employee? Is there anything like this happening in the
private sector right now...are we all competitors or can we look at this as
parts of a larger community picture?

I have an idea that I I've thought long and hard about (at least ten
minutes), and of course, it involves that bad 'ol government. How about
allowing individuals to bid for recycling pickup on a neighborhood basis.
The individuals could meet certain criteria such as a minimum income level,
etc. Same thing could be done for other things, I'm sure (landscape
maintenance?). It's a little different from letting businesses bid and
might distribute a little wealth.
