General comment: Seems to me that most all such measures, while needed at
the spot, reflect an entirely reactive posture rather than a pro-active,
reforming stance by our insitutional leaders. The breakdown not only of
social norms but also of sane social discourse in this country borders on
the frightening. Children only emulate their adult models, their peers,
and increasingly their sources of "entertainment". Who produces these
sources of influence? We see him/her everyday in the mirror. Where is
community building, community consensus in our social values? Must sll be
sacrificed for the benefit of profit, expediency, power etc.? Let's wake
up to the need for community reorganization at all levels. Maybe our
three new city councilors have a word on that, but I wouldn't bet a dime
on it, myself. Since 79% of the cityi elecotrate stayed away from the
polls, we will never know if they have the slightest thought about such
issues. Is this really America?
