In response to a request for more info about the Palouse Land Trust,
following the announcement of the Fosberg gift to Moscow, I am forwarding
this from Lynn Tanimoto, the land trust director:
>
>I am happy to provide information about the Palouse Land Trust -- that's
>my job
>.
>We are a nonprofit organization working to conserve open space, wildlife
>habitat, water quality, and the scenery of the Palouse. We accomplish this
>primarily by working with private land owners and establishing conservation
>easements. A conservation easement is a legal agreement between a
>landowner and a land trust that permanently limits the uses of that land.
>Easements are written to protect conservation values, but the landowners
>continue to own and use their land. They can sell their land or pass it on
>to their heirs, but the conservation easement remains forever.
>
>The Palouse Land Trust was founded in 1995 by Moscow attorney John Norton.
>Board members were selected and an advisory board was created as well. The
>Palouse Land Trust remained an all volunteer group until January 1999 when
>the first staff (part time) was hired -- an executive director. For more
>detailed information on who we are and what we're doing, a person might
>want to read our newsletter and visit our web site at
>www.palouselandtrust.org
>
>We need the people of the Palouse to help us in our private land
>conservation efforts. They can do this by
>becoming a member, telling others about us, or putting us in touch with a
>landowner who may be interested in a conservation easement.
>
>There are more than 1,200 local and regional land trust in the United
>States. For even more information on land trusts you can check out the
>Land Trust Alliance web site: www.lta.org.
