486 machines are not obsolete.
I am writing this from my own 486, 25 megahertz computer. On this machine I
continue to write books for publication, maintain a 30,000 entry mailing
list (on a DOS database program), and keep the books for my business
(Quicken for DOS). We also use this computer for simple publications design
(Adobe Pagemaker). I also read Email and do some internet surfing, although
it is a little slow for a lot of internet stuff. The Windows program I use
is 3.1. I just don't find it necessary to upgrade every time something new
comes out.
So, if you have an old 486 machine, please do not think it is useless to a
student.
