Re: outrage
Pam Palmer asked me to post the following message to Vision2020, as she is
not on the 2020 list, and therefore can not post the message herself:
Robert-
This is in response to the following concern that you sent to me:
>>In the mean time, you could contact city council and ask them to pass (and
>>ask the mayor to sign) a resolution condemning this specific attack, and
>>condemning hatred and hate crimes. Ditto the county government. While
>>this would be a "non-binding resolution," it would send a strong message
>>that all sectors of our town are outraged by this event. So far, I don't
>>think we're getting much in the way of leadership from our "leaders."
I have requested city staff to find out if the City Council has passed a
"hate crimes" resolution in the past. If the answer is no, then I will
present a resolution at the next City Council meeting on Monday, December
7th. If it turns out that we already have a resolution, then I will ask
that it be read at the meeting, with an acknowledgment of our condemnation
of the attack on Lori Graves' home.
You probably already know about the other events being organized in
response to this crime: a candlelight vigil at 5 pm today (Friday) in
Friendship Square, and a town meeting on Tuesday, December 8th at 7:30 pm
in the Community Center. If you wish more specifics about the events, you
can call the event organizers at the Cove Mallard Coalition (882-9755).
In a community like ours, it is necessary for every one of us to be a
leader in our own way, some of us working on one thing, others on another.
I appreciate your own lead of sending me this e-mail so I could clarify
what role the City Council is taking. If you have other questions, please
ask.
Pam
