Economic development

Joan Berney, be careful what you wish for. Economic development is not the
cure you think it is. Phoenix and L.A. have lots of jobs, but who would
want to live there?

You might think Palo Alto, Calif. has what Moscow and Pullman want, an elite
university with great economic growth based on nonpolluting high-tech
businesses (Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Intuit, Netscape, etc.). But I decided
Moscow is a better, saner place to raise a family.

Many of us could be making more money somewhere else, but we came here for
other reasons. Let's not wreck it. I can imagine several qualitative
improvements like the swimming pool, linear parks, Chipman Trail, and a
multifunction community center in a renovated Whitworth Building. But major
economic growth would threaten the quality of life that drew us here. If
you pull in too many people, even the Garden of Eden would become a mess.
