Sometime last Thursday, Feb 19, 1998, Computer Services noticed the
server load on Hickory and Hawthorn significantly increase.
Currently, utilization for these two machines is hitting 100% and
staying there throughout most of the day and evening (Note: response
time does appear to improve between the hours of 11pm to 8am.) Since
Thursday, we have been closely monitoring the system and working hard
to isolate the problem. At this time, we have not been successful in
determining the cause for this condition.

Hickory and Hawthorn's response during 100% utilization is *very*
slow. Users will notice extremely slow login response times
(sometimes it is so slow the login process times out) and poor
turn around for print jobs. Because of this condition, we have
noticed that users tend to print a job four or five times out of
frustration. They also give up during a login and reboot the system
to try again. Unfortunately, all of these actions cause an increased
load on the already overburdened Hickory/Hawthorn. We understand the
frustration, and have asked that users resist from these actions
whenever possible.

Heavy utilization has caused Hickory/Hawthorn (H/H) to go down
periodically. H/H did go down at 12:30pm this afternoon and are not
back up at the time of this email. It should also be noted that the
problems with H/H have caused delays in the distribution of email for
all Novell email servers (Pegasus). Unix mail delivery is not
affected.

Computer Services recognizes the impact this situation has on
students trying to complete their classwork. Please forward this
this note to all Faculty and Instructors so they may make appropriate
adjustments to class assignment deadlines.

Computer Services apologizes for the inconvenience caused and will
work very hard to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.

Thank you,

Chuck Lanham
