I hadn't heard that the Deli was closing. I share the disappointment over
it's closure since, besides offering great sandwiches and baked goods which
our family could enjoy once in awhile if we had a few extra dollars, it was
especially a great place to grab a cup of coffee and warm up in the winter
months or chill out during the Farmer's Market.

And while Cafe Spudnik did offer a unique dining experience, it was even
more rare for us to be able to afford a meal there.

Which, I believe, gets down to what might be the real issue here: economics.

I agree that eating out at fast food establishments is not the most
appealing of dining experiences, but it's usually affordable for those with
limited resources. With budgets that are increasingly tight for many
working families, restaurants that offer relatively expensive, albeit tasty,
fare are simply out of reach.

If anything, I would like to see just a normal, hometown-style cafe open in
Moscow, with reasonable prices and good food served in ample portions.

Bottom line, I don't miss "Spudnik" nearly as much as I miss the old
"Johnny's". On the other hand, I try not to miss either very much because
dining out is just not in the budget.

Any other "visionaries" who mostly just dream of the "dining out experience"?>
