City Council elections

At the request of several members of this list, I inquired about this fall's
city elections. The mayor's position and three City Council positions will
be on the ballot.

Mayor Paul Agidius does not plan to seek another term. (He's served 8 years
as mayor, and he may be prohibited by Idaho's term limits law from running
again.)

The terms of Larry Hodge, Linda Pall and Tony Johnson expire at the end of
this year. Larry does not plan to run again, Linda plans to seek another
four-year term, and Tony apparently has not decided.

Potential candidates must be 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, and a resident of
Moscow for 30 days before the election, which is Nov. 4. Candidates must
submit a nominating petition with the signatures of 40 registered voters.
There is no filing fee. Filing opens Sept. 5 and closes Sept. 25.

The council positions will pay $470 a month beginning in January, and the
mayor's job pays $940 a month as of January, an increase from the current
salaries of $450 and $900 per month.

Candidates must designate a campaign treasurer and comply with Idaho's
Sunshine Law for disclosure of contributions and expenses. More information
is available from City Clerk Elaine Russell at 883-7000.

>From my observation, council members typically attend at least two meetings
a month of the full council plus weekly meetings of the Public Works or
Administrative committees. In addition, council members serve as liaisons
or ex-officio members of several other boards or commissions, such as P&Z,
Arts Commission and Pullman-Moscow Water Resources Committee. Perhaps one
of the current council members could be asked to write something for this
list about the time commitment of serving on the council.
