Friends of Whitworth will sponsor a tour of Moscow's 1912 high school, common
ly known as the Whitworth Building, on Thursday, May 16, starting at 7 p.m.
The tour will be followed at 7:30 by a discussion of ways to finance
renovation of the building.
The tour will begin at the building's west entrance, across from the First
United Methodist Church at Third and Adams streets. It will be led by
Wendy McClure, a University of Idaho architecture professor who has studied
the building's suitability for renovation.
More than 40 people attended a town meeting last month to discuss possible
uses for the building once the Moscow School District moves its administrative
offices to a new location.
"The tour will be an opportunity to match potential community uses to space in
the building," said Jack Porter, a member of Friends of Whitworth. Among the
suggestions made at the April town meeting were for a youth center, a senior
citizen center, a community Internet access site, and a center for arts
and cultural activities.
"We invite representatives of non-profit groups, social-service agencies
and arts organizations to tour the building and see how it might suit their
needs," Porter said.
The Moscow School Board has set a deadline of April 1, 1997
to receive proposals from government agencies interested in purchasing the
building. The Moscow City Council last week asked the city staff to
study acquisition and renovation costs and to determine the building's
suitability for meeting city needs.
