"In response to Sunil, I am willing to make a deal. I will start calling
them public schools in this forum, schools belong to us, the people, if you
all will agree that we, the people, have the right and authority to close
them down if we the people decide to do this in a law-abiding fashion.
Deal?"
Doug, I agree that the people should be able to change their institutions if
they wish; how easy or difficult it is to change them can vary, but I agree
with the idea that if the people in a democracy wish to shut down the public
schools, they can do so, if they can muster the votes.
Whether they should do so is where we obviously differ. I don't believe
that the public schools are religious, and I am committed to the idea that
they should exist. I believe that public education is a civic good, by
whatever mish-mash of standards I apply. My wife and I intend to be
involved in our children's education. If we feel that the public schools
are failing us, if we cannot work towards fixing the problems, then we will
probably look at private schools.
Obviously this is an area where you and I can never agree, since you believe
the public schools are fundementally flawed, at the very least. I expect
that this is an area that will continue to be hotly contested in Moscow; the
question is, Can you muster the votes? Chuck Pezeshki, I think, is correct
in arguing that people who agree with you are far more organized right now
than people who agree with me. We have interesting times ahead of us, don't
you think?
"And the verse you cite is the reason we don't have our kids in the
government schools, but we do pay our taxes. Caesar has his image on our
money, so it is lawful for us to pay taxes to him, even if he is being
unjust. After all, it takes a pillage! But our children have God's image on
them -- and we render to God what is God's."
I like your "[i]t takes a pillage!" line. I knew I shouldn't use Bible
verses with a preacher...
I still would like to know more about the number of people who moved here to
put their kids in Logos. How many regular Vision 2020 writers did so?
Sunil
