Dear visionaries,
Debbie Gray's comment concerning the role of parents was good, but I would
still want to add something.
Institutions can be receptive (or not) to parental input. If an institution
cultivates an attitude of "back off, man, I'm a scientist" when suggestions
are offered by parents, it is not long before parents who believe it is
important for them to be involved will look for a place where they can be
involved without a major hassle.
You get more of what you subsidize and less of what you penalize.
