PRESS RELEASE (for immediate release 8-19-02)

Get connected! Help build the Latah Trail.

The Latah Trail Foundationıs Latah Luau and auction will be Saturday Sept.
14 at the University Inn Best Western in Moscow. The social hour and silent
auction start at 6:00 PM with a no-host bar and entertainment by Makin
Island Music. The full-service dinner begins at 7:00 and includes a wide
variety of Hawaiian style foods and complimentary wine. A live auction of
getaway, recreation, travel-related items, and artwork follows. Proceeds of
the fundraiser will help build the Latah Trail, a paved path for
non-motorized transportation and recreation along the abandoned rail bed
between Moscow and Troy.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday August 21 at Bookpeople in Moscow, the Daily
Grind Coffee House on Main St. in Pullman, Sunset Mart in Troy, and will be
available at the Latah Trail Foundationıs T-shirt table at the Farmerıs
Market in Moscow. Tickets are $35 each, or tables of eight may be purchased
for $240. Fresh flower leis from Hawaii may be ordered by September 1 for
$20. Dress is Island casual.

Last year, the Latah Trail Foundationıs fundraising dinner and art auction
attracted approximately 350 guests and generated over $25,000 for the trail.
Organizers hope to have similar success and just as much fun this year.

³Foundation members see the trail as a means of linking people and places,
not just physically, but in spirit as well,² according to Foundation member
Nancy Chaney. ³Beneficial effects of trail-building efforts will be felt in
many ways, in many places,² she says. This spring, volunteers planted 680
native trees and shrubs along the trail to reduce erosion, provide wildlife
habitat, and improve aesthetics. According to Chaney, benefits of that work
will be realized for many years to come. She points out that individuals
and businesses contributing to the fundraising efforts invest not only in a
trail but also in cultural and environmental education opportunities,
community health and wellness, improved user safety away from cars, and
clean non-motorized transportation.

The planning committee for the luau is still accepting donations of items
and services to be included in the auction and is seeking volunteers to help
with set-up on the day of the auction.

To reserve a table, volunteer, donate goods or services, or for more
information, contact the Latah Trail Foundation at latahtrail@moscow.com or
call Nancy Chaney at 882-9350. Get connected! Help build the Latah Trail.
