Woman's Rights Rally notes and updates
America certainly is an awesome country. I am proud to be able to take a
stand against my government and challenge them openly. Yesterday's Woman's
Rights Rally was a perfect example of how citizens can publicly rally
against a law they feel is unjust.
I want to thank everybody who came or has supported our cause. Yesterday's
rally exceeded my expectations. Thank you!
About 200 showed up. The warmth and excitement was palpable. I left
feeling empowered and convinced that what we are doing is right.
Recordings of the rally are available. I encourage you all to request a
copy (specify tape or cd) This recording will speak for itself. We are
requesting $5 donation. Proceeds will go towards the bond.
I want to stress to those who may percieve what we are doing is crazy that
this issue is not about the topless carwash. It is about stopping our
government from writing sexist and repressive laws.
The nudity ordinance states that a woman cannot show her breasts in public
view. That means her private property, including her home, if it is in
public view. She faces a $500 or 6 months in jail if she is charged with
breaking law.
Our city council could have addressed the topless carwash in a more specific
way. Instead, they wrote a law that sweeps over the whole city. That is
not right.
We are appealing to the city council to rescind the ordinance and come up
with a more specific solution.
If they refuse, this ordinance will be put to a referendum. I have no doubt
we will collect enough signatures and money to put this to a public vote.
In the meantime, we will educate the public about woman's rights, register
people to vote and continue to recieve national attention. When we win, we
will set a precedent for other communities to fight their sexist laws.
We recieved a lot of press yesterday. The Lewiston Morning Tribune ran a
story today. The Moscow-Pullman Daily News and The Daily Evergreen will
have a story tomorrow. KLEW ran a story last night. KXLY will run a story.
I'm sure the national press will run the story as well.
I want to clarify today's LMT story. Unfortunately I was misquoted a bit.
First, I was wearing a blue shirt that said, "We need your support" Second,
I did not say I laid the groundwork, but the groundwork has been laid. I
cannot take complete credit for that. Thank you to everybody who has worked
on this! Third, the complete quote regarding the city council and the
taliban was, "The root is the same. Suppress the rights of woman to prevent
the corruption of men."
My quotes were not accurate, though the jist was there.
It is true that I am stepping down as the "leader" of this movement. I
believe that women need to be empowered by this and lead the movement. Men
will help out, but it is up to women to be in the front. Afterall, this is
a law and root that affects you directly.
I will be taking a break from this for a while to let people think about
what we are doing and how we can win. I encourage people to attend the
farmer's market next saturday and gather signatures for the referndum
petition. There is a lot of support there. You can get petitions from me.
883-7965.
The first week of August we will have a community meeting to elect officers,
develop stratagies and strengthen our solidarity.
Until then, know that we can evolve as a society to overcome the sexist
attitude towards woman.
Peace,
Garrett Clevenger
