RE: Sun. Morn. talkshow "kicks off" tomorrow June 2nd

I don't know how many people listened to the show this morning. I listened
for the first hour and then take care of a previous engagement (some
experiments with explosives).

Anyway... a portion of the show was about Fred Leas problems with the law.
I was the presiding juror on his second trial. On the air today Fred said
some things that were not quite true. I called in to the show and gave my
viewpoint as one of the juror's. He claimed the judge told us that we HAD
to find Mr. Leas guilty. Not true. We were instructed that if we found
certain facts presented to be true then we had to convict. Also Mr. Leas
said nine of the jurors told him they wanted to acquit him but were afraid
of what the judge would do to them if they did. I don't know what they
actually told him, but I do know that no one said anything of that sort
while in the jury room during deliberation.

In general, I have a fair amount of sympathy for Mr. Leas, but his telling
of the story this morning was not entirely accurate and was at least
somewhat unfair to Judge Stegner with whom Mr. Leas claims stepped out of
his judicial bounds. I have no informed opinion about the validity of those
claims in total, but in regards to claims made about Judge Steger's behavior
in the trial that I participated in, I can find no fault with him. This
assumes the reports I read in the newspaper were accurate and complete in
regards to the material the jury was not allowed to hear.

Also, it should be known that, since the trial I have become somewhat
acquainted with Judge Stegner on a personal level because one of his
daughters was a close friend of one of my daughters for a while. I have
visited his house briefly a few times and talked with both he and wife for
probably a total of an hour or two over the last few years. Our
conversations only very briefly touched the Leas case twice. Once when I
saw him in Safeway and I asked what sentence was handed down for Mr. Leas,
and other time when I mentioned that I saw in the papers where Mr. Leas was
to be brought before Judge Stegner for a parole violation.

I have had a web page up about this trial for several years now. I recently
(in the past few hours) moved it to another site and made it a little bit
'prettier' to look at without changing the content. If you are interested
please take a look: http://www.joehuffman.org/Leas/juryduty.htm

Subject: Sun. Morn. talkshow "kicks off" tomorrow June 2nd

Visionaries,
Here's a "shameless plug" that might be of some
public interest.

Tomorrow(Sun. June 2nd) will be the first airing
of a new politics and news talk/interview show on KUOI
89.3 FM. Yours truly will be the host.

The show is called MOSCOW MORNING VIEWS and will
run from 9 am until noon every Sunday for at least the
next few months--hopefully longer.

Tomorrow (Sunday)--two proponents of the Judicial
Accountability Initiative Law--Keith Lunders and Fred
Leas are scheduled in the first two hours(9am-11am) to
discuss their ongoing JAIL initiative efforts and
personal experiences that led them to their activism.

In the last hour(11am-12noon) Brian C. Peters,
excellent politics writer for the Lewiston Morning
Tribune, is scheduled to discuss last weeks Idaho
primary results and the current outlook for the
November elections.

The show welcomes on-topic callers and call-in
numbers will be provided during the show--the
broadcast can be heard via streaming audio at the KUOI
website--KUOI.org.

Also, suggestions for future shows and guests can
be made either by responding to this email or by
calling (208) 882-9030.
        Thanks, TL
