*****ABOUT THE LATAH COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER CENTER*****
In October of 2000, more than 150 citizens came together in a community
forum to explore volunteerism in Latah County. This diverse group,
composed of representatives from service and community organizations,
educational institutions, local non-profit agencies, and city and county
governments, determined there was a need for coordination and enhancement
of volunteer services in Latah County. To address this need, the group
decided to develop a center where community members could become connected
with volunteer opportunities. This marked the beginning of the Latah
Community Volunteer Center. During the planning stages, a sixteen member
Board of Directors was formed and the following mission statement
developed:

The Latah Community Volunteer Center is a catalyst for connecting Latah
County residents of all ages to local volunteer opportunities. Community
members will increase their capacity to care for each other by enhancing
community service partnerships, addressing community challenges, and
building on community strengths.

The Board elected officers, drafted bylaws, established non-profit status,
and developed a workplan. Committees were formed to focus on start-up
operations including:
-researching successful volunteer centers,
-cataloging volunteer needs in Latah County,
-developing an easily accessible system for matching volunteers with
opportunities,
-identifying a location to house the center,
-obtaining start up funding,
-promoting the value and benefit of volunteerism; and
-developing a county-wide celebration for volunteers in Latah County.

While still in the planning stages, LCVC will support the work of many
organizations and has the potential to impact all 32,146 residents of
Latah County. It is estimated that 15,000 hours of volunteer service per
year will flow through this center when it is operational.
