Re: Petition to postpone tax cuts

Sadly, there IS no "party of fiscal responsibility".  Both Republicans and Democrats spend like drunken sailors, apparantly on the theory that when the deficit chickens come home to roost and the Social Security system, among other things, crashes, they will no longer be in office.

It comes from not knowing the difference between a "balanced budget" and a "national debt".

Do the politicians even know what they're doing
in terms of fiscal policy? Under the Clinton
Administration my income was very high and I paid
high taxes, which by the way I was happy to do.
Under the Bush Administration, I received a piddly
$300 tax refund and I'm paying less taxes mainly
because my income has signigicantly decreased.
It seems to me that good fiscal policy would include
things that are common sensibly healthy...like
balancing the budget instead deficit spending,
paying down the huge debt that was racked up during
Reagan's false economy, and also spending enough money
on the infrastucture (such as schools) that will pay
big dividends in the future.

I used to buy into the Republican claim that they
were the party of fiscal responsibility, but I no
longer believe it. They are the party that wants
a very limited government and very little government
spending. This isn't necessarily the b est policy for
the future growth of the nation. How many medical
and technical advances would there be without the
government providing grants to Universities? Private
industry doesn't throw money at way-out-there research
projects that may or more likely may not amount to
anything. And when they do hit on a breakthrough,
this University research is then typically transfered
out into the Private sector where the big profits are
generated.

I think the postponement of tax cuts for the overall
greater good of supporting the infrastructure...and
long term real economic growth is a terrific idea.

Many Latah County residents are concerned about the
potential harm to public
schools, higher education, medical assistance to
low-income families and
other state programs as a result of Idaho's huge
budget shortfall. Here's
your chance to tell the state's leaders that these
cuts are unacceptable.

Several groups, including the Idaho Federation of
Teachers, Friends of
Neighborhood Schools and the Associated Students of
the University of Idaho,
are collecting signatures on a petition, which asks
the Legislature to
postpone the tax cuts approved a year ago. This
action would not repeal
the cuts - only delay them until the state economy
improves.

Rep. Tom Trail of Moscow has offered to personally
deliver these petitions
to Gov. Dirk Kempthorne and leaders of the House of
Representatives and the
Senate. So far, several hundred signatures have
been collecte d, but more
are needed.

If you'd like to sign the petition, please stop by
BookPeople on Main Street
in Moscow no later than Saturday, Feb. 2. If you'd
like a copy of the
petition to circulate among your neighbors or
co-workers, please contact me.
We're especially interested in finding people in
other parts of the state
to circulate the petition.

Let's keep our schools and the University of Idaho
strong by protecting them
from devastating cuts in state support.
