I have spent all weekend trying not to be FURIOUS with the Moscow School
District. I was raised and went to school in Moscow, so I have been there and
done that. My children have, in the past attended, and still attend Moscow
Schools. The very idea of cutting one single teacher while after school sports
programs are kept infuriates me. The time to talk about cutting the best
resource - our very skilled and competent teachers should be after everything
else is gutted. Maintenence to playing fields not directly connected to the
schools, maybe even the off limits football and varsity baseball fields should
be first on the chopping block. It always rankled with me that there was an
entire field lovingly, obsessively maintained by the district that we regular
students could be discipled for setting foot on. And as for playing PE baseball
or softball on that field, forget about it. In fact I don't think a single
female was ever allowed to play on that field in my entire time in either Jr.
High or High school, and my understanding is that it still hasn't changed. Way
to spend that money, nothing like a little discrimination(unequal facilities)
to make me interested in subsidizing sports. And if other more academic
pursuits have to be shut off, then so be it. I ran track and xcountry and I have
to say it was fun, but I could have survived without it. Yes children may be
more interested in school if they have extra curricular activities but studies
show smaller classrooms play a much more significant role. I wish the district
would look very, very closely at the services they provide and see that maybe
what the voters said was not cut teachers, but quit offering services that
benefit only a select few.
