If you are interested in hiking in a national park
in
central Chile with the option of summiting a volcano,
continue reading
so you understand the conditions and
then contact Diana Armstrong at drarmstrng43@yahoo.com
for more
information.

At the present time, your dollar in Chile buys a
lot
of pesos--goes a long ways. Round trip from Stgo to
Miami is about
$800, I think. The ideal would be to
travel for a month with this 6-day hike
as the
adventure highlight. To do the hike only, you need 12
days in
Chile. Yes, you could do it in a couple less
but I'm not willing to take the
risk by rushing--you
need to recover from jet lag, drink some
wine,
acclimatize, drink some wine, eat some fish, etc,
before and after
the hike, which is quite demanding.

Dates:

Option 1. February 1 or Feb. 15 if you believe
you
need an interpreter along, that is, me. (I'm working
in January,
hiking in February, and returning to the
states in March).

Option 2. If you are comfortable with Spanish,
then
you could come anytime from January through March and
hike with the
guide, a friend of mine.

Costs:

In both options, you would have to pay the guide
$30 a
day while in the park, which includes a park camping
fee, and of
course, all your own expenses. I would
also ask you pay me for my time spent
making the
necessary arrangements (hotels, transportation) for
you.

Location:

The National Park is called Gil de Vilches and it
is
in the Cordilleras above the city of Talca, which is 4
hours south of
Santiago. The volcano is Vulcan
Descabazado and is about 3800 meters high.

Fitness Issues:

You have to carry your own stuff. You need to be
in
good shape. It is a demanding 6 days. The area is very
hot during the
day, but there's abundant water in the
park.

If this year is impossible, think about next year.

NOTE: I will be in Moscow in June and July 2002
if
anyone wants to talk about this hike with me or see
slides.
