RE: PSA/Press Release/Calendar Items
From: Andriette Pieron - Neill Public Library

Neill Public Library has received grant funding from the Washington
Commission for the Humanities and the Friends of Neill Public Library to
conduct a series of four Cultural Programs. The series is also
sponsored by many local organizations as well as departments at Washington
State University and the University of Idaho.

All programs will be held at Neill Public Library on Thursday evenings
at 7:00 p.m. and at Pullman High School to selected classes on the
following Friday mornings.

Jan. 11 - Nancy Nelson: African American Women in Music Not Just the
Blues

Feb. 8 - Brian Pertl: Joiks, Panpipes and Talking Drums: Another Sonic
Adventure of Global Proportions

March 15 - Antoinette Botsford: Tales from a Metis Childhood

May 17 - Carl Allen: Woody Guthrie and the Columbia River Songs

The first program is African American Women in Music: Not Just the Blues
Presenter Nancy J. Nelson is director of the African American Education
Program at Eastern Washington University. She earned a Masters of Arts in
education from Antioch University and is currently a doctoral candidate for
Leadership in Education, 2002, from Walden University. Through her company,
Nancy J. Nelson Productions, she produces and directs educational programs
that blend music and
words to deliver messages on African American issues, multi-cultural issues
and history.

African American women have not only composed some of today's jazz
standards, but have composed and performed award-winning classical
compositions, symphonies and operas. This is an accomplishment on two
levels. First, it goes beyond society's accepted roles for women and for
African American women in particular, and it dispels the idea that African
Americans are incapable of writing classical music.
Nancy J. Nelson blends history, music by African American women composers,
and her own story as a vocalist to break down stereotypes and provide
insight into the lives of these amazing women.
