The middle ground would be for the hospitals to reduce duplication in their 
equipment and services, and happily refer patients to each other when in 
the patients' best interest.  This also requires a restructuring of social 
behavior, but it would be much more cost-effective than building a joint 
facility.  Another thing to watch for is that the hospitals, in conducting 
such a plan, don't run afoul of antitrust regulation.
