Has anyone noticed the seven trees next to Perimeter Drive's sidewalk,
above the Kibbie Dome and UI outdoor track, that are tagged for
destruction?
I asked Charles Zillinger, a member of Facilities-Landscape at UI, about
this. He said that several of the tree were badly conformed, and the three
nearest the top of the hill were "weed" trees. The removal will be
followed by the planting of 45 saplings along both sides of Perimeter Dr.
After hearing this, several of us walked up to examine the trees again. A
couple of the marked trees seemed in mediocre condition, but the others
looked quite healthy and attractive, to the untrained eye at least. They
are all good sized and nicely spaced. The three closest to the dome may be
"weed" trees in the eyes of an arborist, but to us seemed like inoffensive
and rather pleasant trees. They nicely soften the view of the Kibbie Dome
from Perimeter Drive with a pleasant lace work of branches.
Perhaps a few of the trees could be reprieved until the future saplings get
larger. According to the posted signs, any comment needs to be received by
Moscow Parks and Rec. by 5 p.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, April 25.[883-7085.]
I'd urge everyone interested to drive by and form their own opinion. The
trees are easily spotted; each has a prominent orange sign attached.
