RE: East City Path Lights

Dear friends,

I have to agree that we are plagued by indiscriminate use of lighting in the
"civilized" world. I also have to acknowledge that dark corners in public
areas encourage illegal activities. My recommendation is to have very tight
specifications for lighting in the city. There are many light fixtures
available that force the light downward instead of upward. These light
fixtures reduce light pollution and save energy. Since they reflect the
photons to where is needed instead of into space, they can use smaller light
bulbs, which use less power. Everyone wins... those who are concerned with
the dark and those of us who want to look at the stars. In my opinion, the
city should disallow all lights failing to meet these criteria in the city
limits. The current lighting situation is a blatant example of lack of
vision and concern for the environment and the habitat we all live in.

Shahab...

May I respectfully dissent? One of the pleasures of living in a small
town is the ability to occasionaly observe the sky and stars at night,
even from within the city limits. (Rant on) One of the most disturbing
trends is people moving into the countryside, and putting up lightpoles
with sodium lights that burn all night. Or houses covered with Christmas
lights that burn all night well into the spring. We want to
decommission hydroelectric dams while continuing to overlight our
environment at all times, even when there is no one in the vicinity to
shine the lights on. (rant off).
