Re: pool cover question

Tom,

I don't recall there being an option to vote for an indoor pool. Some people
voted for an outdoor pool because they wanted an outdoor pool. Some voted
for an outdoor pool because the other option was NO pool. The reason given
at the time for making an outdoor pool was that it would be too expensive to
build a covered pool. There certainly was never any consensus that an indoor
pool geared to family use was not desirable--only consensus that an indoor
pool was unaffordable at the time.

However, this pool has been constructed to allow for a seasonal bubble,
which would give the outdoor pool enthusiasts an outdoor pool in the summer
and the indoor pool enthusiasts an indoor pool with slides and water toys
more geared to family recreational use than the UI pool. The pool was also
discussed as part of a much larger recreational complex, should funds become
available, though no promises were made.

There clearly are people who believe investing in a pool cover would be a
"value added" investment, allowing the $3 million + already spent on a pool
of use 3 months of the year to have that investment extended for a full
year. I think it is premature to take sides over how the $5 million bequest
should be used, but certainly at some point a cover for the pool should be
on the table, as should the larger recreational complex.
