A few years ago, the V2020 list was bubbling with a contraversy about a
series of postings from 2 subscribers accusing a local judge and attorney
(by name) of a variety of illegal acts. At that point, those postings were
archived with all the others.
The steering committee for V2020 (of which I was a member) recommended that
the entire archives, containing those postings (which certainly could have
been considered libelous), be eliminated. This recommendation was made in
response to a demand from the attorney involved that the postings relevant
to the accusations about him be purged. We did not want to take
responsibility to manage/control the archives, so we decided to ask the
members to eliminate them.
The response from the V2020 membership was clear. Most V2020 subscribers
wanted to retain the archives--primarily as a historical record and a way to
follow the threads of conversations backward. So, they remain. And that is
the purpose of the archives, as I see them.
