End of the Millennium list

Dear Visionaries,

I returned from a campaign swing to the south land and was greeted with
really wonderful messages. They are humbling and warming at the same time.

I have to put in my vote too and I would go with Mark Miller on the
nomination of Norma Dobler. I would add two nominees, Boyd and Grace Martin,
now both deceased.

As for Norma, I continue to be touched and influenced by her wisdom and
counsel as I make this COngressional run. I rememebr when I was fresh off
the boat in Moscow in the early 1970s, young and eager to be party of civic
life. She was already in the House of Representatives, making a difference
for every child in Idaho, making kindergarten a reality in Idaho school
districts. I asked her before my first run for the COuncil (1975) what her
advice would be. It was great advice then AND now. She said be positive.
Everything you hope to do rests on getting people to see the promise, magic
and hope in what you propose. The only way to get that message out is to do
it in a positive way. There will be plenty of people who will tear things
down: you never have to be part of the demolition team. Now, that is a
'Linda translation' over the years but I am using that same advice every
single day in this campaign and I'm thanking Norma for that wisdom as I do it.

Boyd and Grace were visionaries of the highest order. They put together the
idea and the seed money for the Martin Peace Institute, research into the
causes of war and the conditions of peace. Having lived through World War II
and Boyd having been in the mix at the birth of the United Nations, they
both knew how important it is to have a bigger view of humanity and this big
blue marble we live on. As a result, the Institute was born and continues
today, making a difference in education research and practical application
of peaceful methods of dispute resolution.

Boyd and Grace gave us something else that was mighty important, as did
Norma and Cliff Dobler: the example of two happy marriages where both
parties loved and valued each other.

Public and private vision and examples: what a gift from these wonderful
people to take into the future.

All the best for a great week: don't forget the Martin Luther King Jr
Breakfast next Saturday morning at the Junior High School. Lend your
presence to the Latah County Human Rights Task Force and the demonstration
of community that is this wonderful celebration!

Linda Pall
