In August of '98, AHA had a very significant lay-off, reducing from 80
people to a little less than 40, close to the size they were when they left
Moscow. Many factors contributed to this, including AHA's major customer
suddently and drastically dropping its orders, a huge investment in a risky
and ill-fated long-term project that had been draining corporate resources
and finances, and an overture for increased outside investment that fell
far short of expectations. The crisis resulted in the President, John
Overby resigning, and after a formal search, another founder, Pat Owsley,
being elected the new president.
Things are now looking better, bouncing back to profitability in the first
quarter of this year, and with a new product direction that looks much more
promising than the products being invested in before the lay-off.
