Re: ice skating rink for the palouse

were getting a skating rink at the old Safeway store (where Gart's is now
located). I remember this because at the time I was driving my young
daughter three times a week to Spokane to the rink there. She had been
interested in ice skating before our move here and had participated in some
local ice shows and competitions and I hoped to keep the interest alive.
Alas, three times a week is just not enough ice time and the rumor was
without foundation. The ice rink never did materialize.  At that time we had
two roller rinks and even that did not work out financially for either of
the owners.  I question if area residents are at all interested in having
facilities for activities for families and youth.  The two roller rinks are
long gone for lack of participation.....no more bowling alley....a fast food
restaurant stands in the spot where the bowling alley once was and the one
in the Sub recently closed as well....the community has had a really long
hard haul to get a skateboard park built for the kids and hopfuly it will be
finally built this coming spring.....We do have what looks like a wonderful
water park with pools and slides.....but this will only be able to be used
comfortably three or four months of every year as it was built completely
open to the elements.  The other nine months families can drive by and look
wistfully at what could have been a year-round fun center.  Just saying we
HAVE these things is not enough....they have to be used and enjoyed. The
community has to support what they have. Until then, don't get your hopes up
like I did 21 years ago.
