factory farms

I noted a little bit of interest from this list in CAFO's so, for those who
are interested, you can find a good summary of the impacts of factory hog
farms in the papers of Ag Economist John Ikerd. His website is
http://www.ssu.missouri.edu/faculty/jikerd/papers/.

In particular read "Economic Impact of Increased Contract Swine Production
in Missouri", "Large Scale, Corporate Hog Operations", and "Top 10 Reasons
for rural communities to be concerned about large-scale, corporate hog
operations."

Corporate hog operations are proposed for southern Idaho and eastern
Washington. This is something we can and should prevent. Where they have
been allowed the environmental impacts are disasterous, the economic
impacts have been negative, and the social impacts have been dreadful.
