There is a movement in Whitman County to "open up" the county for
subdivision of agricultural land. The driving force behind this is
economic. Wheat prices insure that farmers are living on subsidies.
Farmers want to know why they have to leave thier land fallow for three
years before short platting. If a farmers' son has no interest in
continuing the business, how can a long-time farmer justify holding on to
huge tracts of land that drive him deeper in debt? I think economics will
always win out over environment.
