(Fwd) Re: Daily news

This is how Roger Kendall answered the "why" question at the
League of Women Voters' noon meeting Wednesday:

1) The Alford family took on a certain amount of debt in buying
the paper and it will take about 7 years for that debt to be
paid off. After the debt is paid off, the paper will begin
building again. At his age (mid-50s), he didn't consider it
wise professionally to commit himself to a holding
pattern for that long.

2) As a single person, he has found it more difficult than he
had anticipated to find a satisfying social circle -- people
who were both not employed by him and not wanting something
from him -- in this small town. Often frustrated with his work
life, he felt the lack of a satisfying social life all the more.

In short, time to move on. League meetings (noon - 1 pm in
the Appaloosa Room of the UI Sub) are open to the public and you
might be surprised what you can learn there: just how well are
our county commissioners working together? what's up with the
Gritman-Pullman Memorial merger? is Medicare going to be
reformed? ...
