I am opposed to a "letters to the editor" format for V 2020 in future
elections. Let the Daily News do that--which I think often becomes a form of
free advertising. I'd like to keep that off this list. I do think that asking
candidates to address specific questions is a good idea, although I might
support asking candidates to submit questions or to propose some way to
highlight differences among them. For example, Steve Busch and I had both
voted on the Parkview Estates issue long before the campaign. Although that
left the other 6 candidates out, I think that kind of thing would be worth
knowing and perhaps discussing. Similarly, we weighed in last winter on the
"topless" ordinance on different sides. Regardless whether that would have
been a defining difference between us, that issue was worthy of discussion so
that when it rears its head again we will all be more informed about it.
I also find it somewhat hilarious that we heard from several candidates once
and only once on the list. I'd like to see more of our city officials at least
"hear" this little part of public dialog rather than join only when it suits
the political moment.
