For those of you who have questions about the safety of our schools, and
particularly about the incident last year when a bomb scare at the high school
could not be investigated because the local P.D. does not have a bomb squad, it
was announced at last night's school board meeting that the district was
participating with the cities of Moscow and Pullman, the Pullman school
district, U of I and WSU in the funding for purchase and maintenance of an
explosive-detecting dog. The total cost was announced at around $20K to be
shared equally by the named entities. The dog must be transported to Texas for
training and will be housed in Pullman. The superintendant mentioned that the
dog can supposedly sniff out a pack of matches in a backpack in a locker. It
is unfortunate that we have to even think about such things, let alone plan for
them, but this seemed an example of good cooperative planning for our community
at several levels. Chief Weaver, if you are listening could you give us any
more details about when the dog will be in place and what the response time to
Moscow is projected to be?
