Both U of I and WSU ag experts are advocating a "new" system of "NoTill"
which, when properly managed in the fields, obviates the"need" to burn
remaining stalks or even to turn them over when plowing. You might want
to consult Prof. Roger A. Veseth on this, or Dean Branen, whatever. All
is not yet lost! Burning goes way back in time to more "primitive"
cultures, including Native American, and in societies like Java-Sumatra,
where burning is an almost holy function, intending to return nutrients
to the soil after harvest. But check with those who do the research.
