Your points make a lotta sense and a guide to citizen thinking about the
place of lethal weapons in our lay society. Except for guns for hunting
purposes and perhaps a small household weapon -- all of which should be
registered within 24 hours of purchase -- individuals should not have
legal access to any other kind of gun w/o law enforcement control. Gun
clubs and the like can be much better monitored than they are now. I
served in WW II (l943-46) and learned how to handle, take apart and
secure my weapons. Everyone who has a legal right to possess a weapon
ought also to have formal training from qualified persons. It's
interesting that the two nations having the highest rates of gun-related
deaths per year (over 500 per million inhabitants, I believe -- I have
the data somewhere on my shelf) are the USA and Russia. Both also have
the highest crime rates in the world. We sure have good company! Isn't
it time for a change? Our state and national police associations all
agree that it is.
