RE: no personal checks, please

Visionaries:
I have asked several store personnel if the debit card costs the store money by
way of a discount as a regular credit card did. I assumed it did, but wanted
to be sure. Finally, I was able to ask an owner/cashier who said yes, in fact,
it did cost a couple % to take the card that was not a factor with a
check--although there is a fixed charge per check. worked out that it's better
for the merchant to take a check for items in the $10 or so and up category and
the card for amounts below. So, I stopped using the debit card with local
stores except for small purchases.

I understand the inconvenience of Applebees not taking our checks, but perhaps
the way to look at it is that it's less money in Applebees' pocket if we pay
by credit or debit card (but perhaps more in the pocket of the Salt Lake City,
Seattle, ... bank).
