There's been quite a bit published recently on the take-over of local radio
stations by chains. They program nationally, distribute the programming via
satellite. The local announcer occasionally reads the local ads and runs
contests. Most have dropped national and local news as well. The reason?
Communications reform, which allowed corporations to own multiple stations in a
local market, and by and large, dropped all real requirements for stations to
serve the public interest.
